But, there were times that I didn’t really like him and didn’t agree with the decisions that he made throughout the novel. The dude's a photography collector not a novelist. All in all, not a great book but not a bad one either. I've heard the second and third ones are better and since I already plunked down the cash for them, I'm going to go ahead and read them. I loved Jacob right off the bat - loved his voice ( the narrator was ADORABLE & WHOLESOME). I can't imagine anybody not being drawn into the story immediately.

If I read the book first, I typically always like the book more. [Who hasn't seen this creepy book, lurking proudly in the "New Releases" section? It practically SCREAMS Halloween--a nice, delightful scare that makes you lock your doors tighter, leave on the nightlight, and snuggle deeply under your covers. I'm tired of defending myself for the egregious crime of not liking a book and writing about it.
Malthus — Malthus was once a peculiar and an old friend of Dr. Golan's who also joined the rebellion against the ymbrynes, dying by the results of the experiment designed to overthrow them and reemerging a hollow. He now travels with the restored Golan, devouring peculiars as they discover time loops. For reasons not specified, Golan allowed him to kill Abraham before they could learn the location of Miss Peregrine's loop.

Similar to towns, cities, states, and countries, they act as specific locations. Together they create a vast and quite complex world of varying whereabouts and dates only peculiars are able to enter. Within these loops, peculiars live indefinitely without aging or reliving previous experiences, even as the day around them repeats itself. While it may appear to be a form of eternal youth, it is the suspension of time inevitable. In reality, many, if not all, of Miss Peregrine's children are over fifty years old, but the loop detains them as teenagers and small children physically and mentally. A loop must be reset daily or it will collapse, leaving all peculiars within it exposed to the outside world.
The movie seemed to have put three books into one, and swapped people’s abilities, and made up some scenes and places. But then his grandpa dies, and Jacob sees the monsters himself. Despite everyone believing that he is crazy, just like his grandpa, Jacob now has no choice but to find these strange children - and get answers to all his questions.

Jacob becomes subject to acute stress reaction after witnessing his grandfather's death and claiming that a monster from his grandfather's childhood stories had killed him. Everyone he knows begins to consider him crazy and avoids him. His parents eventually take him to see a psychiatrist, on whose instruction Jacob's dad takes him on a trip to the Welsh island where his grandfather grew up. There, Jacob discovers that the stories of a magical orphanage and both peculiar children and the monster are real. He also learns that the ability to see these monsters is actually an extremely rare peculiarity as they are invisible to all but a few like himself. The result was a story about a boy Jacob Portman who follows clues from his grandfather's old photographs which lead him on an adventure that takes him to a large abandoned orphanage.
As I got older, though, I began to have doubts. When I was six I decided that my only chance of having a life half as exciting as Grandpa Portman’s was to become an explorer. He encouraged me by spending afternoons at my side hunched over maps of the world, plotting imaginary expeditions with trails of red pushpins and telling me about the fantastic places I would discover one day. At home I made my ambitions known by parading around with a cardboard tube held to my eye, shouting, “Land ho! I’d been born in the wrong century, and I felt cheated. Jacob’s grandfather always used to tell him stories about his childhood.
I could have used more explanation about the wights and hollows too. I also really enjoyed the pictures that were strategically placed throughout the book. I actually grabbed this book because I loved the movie. This is just one of those books whose hype I don't really "get." I read this years ago when it was newly released, and was thoroughly unimpressed. Upon my second reading of this book, my opinion remains unchanged.

She speaks with a thick Irish accent, though she rarely speaks at all, and has a romantic, symbiotic relationship with Hugh. Bronwyn Bruntley — A young adolescent possessing super-human strength, Bronwyn is also kindhearted and a loyal friend. She respects and obeys Miss Peregrine more than her fellow wards do, often correcting them and citing rules they're meant to follow, mostly in fear of anyone getting in trouble. The only occasions for which she refuses to cooperate are when she is made to dress ladylike.
I grew to understand his relationship with his grandfather. I grew to understand his curiosity and restlessness, his peculiarity. The author writes that this book, like the first Harry Potter, is meant to introduce his characters and his world to readers. It is in the second book in the series, Hollow City, that we can expect to enter that world and experience it more fully. I cannot speak to that one, as I have not yet read it.
I especially loved the analogy of an orphaned Jewish boy hiding, not from Nazis, but from monsters because he was peculiar. What a treat to be able to read about characters and then have mysterious pictures of them pop up several pages later. Jacob Porter had been enthralled by his grandfather Abe’s magical, if frightening, tales of his past, horrifying monsters in pursuit and a safe haven of a special school in Wales for those fortunate enough to escape. But when Jacob is a teen, and his grandfather is brutally murdered, he has cause to reconsider. This is kinda like uh...a hipster Harry Potter. There are tons of cool vintage photographs that lend the air of a turn of the century freak show.
